Our aim is to illucidate the processes that maintain and regulate renal filtration. The unique structure of the glomerular filtration barrier guarantees a lifelong filtration process, without loosing cells or albumin. We have developed tools to characterize specific parts of this process in order to better understand physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms. Most recently we introduced a new structural model of the slit- diaphragm and were able to partly decipher the molecular composition of the building blocks of this extraordinary cell-cell contact. We are currently exploring the signalling properties of this structure and investigate the effects of certain signalling cascades for glomerular diseases.
