Our aim is to elucidate the processes that maintain and regulate renal filtration. The unique structure of the glomerular filtration barrier guarantees a lifelong filtration process without loosing cells or albumin. We have developed tools to characterize specific parts of this process in order to better understand physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms. Most recently we introduced a new structural model of the slit-diaphragm and were able to partly decipher the molecular composition of the building blocks of this extraordinary cell-cell contact. We are currently exploring the signaling properties of this structure and investigating the effects of certain signaling cascades for glomerular diseases.
