The new European research consortium KidMED-CKM, led by the UKE, will receive approximately 26.7 million euros in funding over five years from the Danish nonprofit corporate foundation, the Novo Nordisk Foundation. Within the consortium, scientists from Hamburg, Aarhus, and Aachen are collaborating across disciplines with the goal of bringing about a paradigm shift in the treatment of cardiovascular–kidney–metabolic (CKM) syndrome, that is, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, and metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity—moving away from the treatment of late-stage complications toward early, kidney-focused precision medicine.
