Podocyte Signaling Networks From basic concepts to disease understanding

Podocytes are an essential component of the filtration system of the kidney. These cells are particularly susceptible to injury due to genetic, hemodynamic, metabolic, inflammatory and environmental factors. From a medical point of view, the loss of podocytes plays a crucial role in the most common forms of chronic kidney disease. “With our research program, we want to specifically decipher the complex relationships of kidney filtration - as a basis for precise, cell-targeted therapies of tomorrow,” says kidney researcher Prof. Dr. Tobias Huber. The new research project, which brings together scientists from the fields of medicine, biology, chemistry, genetics, computer science and mathematics, aims to change this. The collaborative research center will be funded with around 15.5 million euros over the next four years.
